Living With Diabetes

Over time, high blood sugar levels can damage your eyes, blood vessels, nerves, and kidneys.

In turn, this nerve damage can lead to foot sores, problems with digestion, and impotence. Damage to your blood vessels increases your risk of heart attack and stroke.

The good news is that many of these problems can be delayed or even prevented with treatment.

The goal of diabetes treatment is to keep your blood sugar level as close to normal as possible.

The first step in living with diabetes is to eat a healthy diet and make sure you get enough exercise.

You’ll also need to check your blood sugar level regularly, and if diet and exercise alone aren’t enough to keep your blood sugar at a healthy level, you may need to take insulin or prescription medications under a doctors care.

You need to quit smoking as soon as possible, and only drink alcohol in moderation.
